I was in my own little world when he hit me with the question regarding what’s the purpose of purple primer, I gave my lame response but here’s the accurate answer. These jobs always get people rattled😆. But I do layout the entire reasoning in the caption, you just have to read it!
The #1 question I get asked when I’m working on live lines is, “Why don’t you have the valve shut?!”
So I figured I’d show you (in a controlled environment and already flooded crawlspace due to the leak that’s being repaired)
The water pressure is too great to allow a connection between the pipe and fitting, whether it be a slip connection or more commonly what I do is threaded on cisterns.
Having the valve open allows the water to have a path through the piping so you can make the connection and tighten it up. And yes, sometimes you do have to work live, on water tanks to prevent having to drain and waste thousands of gallons, or if there’s no curb stop, such as a mobile home park or private water distribution, or it just can’t be found, which was the case here, I spent over a hour looking for the meter to repair the leaking coupling below the shut off (which had already flooded the crawlspace for weeks or possibly even months). In rural communities sometimes “calling the city” isn’t an option, it doesn’t work that way here.
The options were given to the homeowner and they said send it. Always ask first, just be prepared to get soaked.

NO1. Didn’t ask enough questions.
Early on, I stayed quiet because I didn’t want to look stupid or slow the job down. Looking back, that held me back more than any mistake I could’ve made by asking. The apprentices who ask questions learn faster, make fewer repeat errors, and earn trust quicker.
2. Focused too much on the money.
I worried too much about hourly rates instead of the skills I was building. At apprentice level, experience is the real currency. Once you’re qualified, the money comes anyway—but only if your skill set is strong.
3. Didn’t make as many connections as I could have.
I worked with heaps of good sparkies, supervisors, and other trades but didn’t always put effort into building relationships. Those connections are what open doors later—better jobs, better sites, and better opportunities once you’re qualified.
4. Tried to do everything myself.
I thought being independent meant not needing help, but that mindset slowed my progress. Good apprentices know when to step up and when to lean on others. Learning how different people do things is how you sharpen your own skills.
5. Didn’t think long-term early enough.
I treated the apprenticeship like something to “get through” instead of something to leverage. If I’d thought more about where I wanted to end up, I would’ve been more intentional with the companies I worked for and the experience I chased.
