To study the way materials perform when struck with miniscule projectiles, such as micrometeoroids in space, NIST researchers fired micron-scale glass particles at speeds of 100-520 meters per second (224-1163 miles per hour) toward a polymer and created this cone-shaped result. When the glass microprojectiles impacted the polymer, they created a shallow dent and then bounced off in another direction, but the damage wasn’t just on the surface. We used special molecules in the polymer that fluoresce when damaged (mechanophores) to show the effect of the impact beneath the surface as well. In this cone shape, the bright blue areas represent the subsurface damage. Subsurface damage isn’t typically easy to see, which is why our researchers envision this could be a useful imaging method beyond aerospace applications, even for developing padding to protect against brain injuries. And what is the cone shape, anyway? It’s called a Mach cone, which is created by sound waves when an object travels through a material faster than sound could. In the world of 3D printing, different techniques are used to print different materials ranging from metals to polymers. Now, a team of researchers from @uofpenn, @cuboulder and NIST has developed a new method, which significantly improves the durability and strength of materials like polymers. The novel approach, called CLEAR, builds upon a 3D printing technique called vat photopolymerization – a method that uses UV light to cure liquid resin to print materials layer by layer. The difference with CLEAR is that it uses a combo of light and dark chemical reactions to create densely entangled polymer chains. Exhibit A (shown here) is an auxetic material – which stretch and compress in ways that defy common sense – created using CLEAR. The material is shown being squished before bouncing back to its original shape.
