While there are a lot of techniques I've learned from videos and books there are some techniques and innovations that come simply from 1. Observing to understand what a plant needs. 2. Being creative with what you have available. 3. Providing those conditions to see if they will work. The more you do it the more innate new techniques become to the point where you can reliably provide the conditions a plant/ecosystem needs without needing someone to guide or teach you each step of the way. Many of the techniques I've learned from others were unique to those individuals. So I pass onto you something I didn't learn from someone else but through trial and error, a connecting of the dots! This is the probe technique, taking advantage of chits that are way to long to plant normally! This works because potatoes are powerhouses of propagation, anything that comes from the potato itself is a clone of the mother plant, a chit has many of the available genetic stem cells to form a healthy independent plant, initially they might not do as good as a plant started from a portion of the potato itself, but because they are so long they will be able to access deeper moisture and once they are established will have many more rooting points without the need to hill up as often. Of course some of these chits are still longer than the hole I was able to make for them, so it's important to not leave anything above the ground exposed, simply cover with some straw so they don't dry out or get sun damaged in the heat, eventually the roots will establish, they will get stronger then they will push through the straw and form bigger leaves! I estimate a 60% to 70% survival ratio of the 70 chits I planted! #permaculture #garden #potato

GROWING POTATOES IN BUCKETS — Did you know you can influence how productive your potato plant will be before it even hits the soil? Prep your seed potatoes by “chitting” them and leaving only two eyes to sprout. It might feel counterintuitive, but this is all about energy allocation. Instead of spreading resources across a bunch of weak shoots, the plant channels its stored starches into two strong sprouts that can support better tuber development later on. For the soil, keep it light and rich with a 50 50 mix of peat moss and compost. This balance gives you both moisture retention and airflow, which is key because potatoes form underground stems called stolons that need loose soil to expand. As you build your bucket, think in layers. Fill a seven gallon bucket one third at a time, placing two seed potatoes per layer. This mimics hilling by encouraging more sites along the buried stems where new potatoes can form. At each layer, mix in a bit of blood meal, fish meal, and an all purpose fertilizer to supply steady nutrients as the plant grows. Once filled, top it with straw to lock in moisture and regulate temperature, then water it in well. When the plants flower and eventually die back, that is your signal that tuber formation is complete. From just a few seed potatoes, you can end up with a full bucket harvest of 15 to 20 potatoes, all from a setup that fits in a small space. A small bucket, a few seed potatoes, and a little strategy can go a long way 🥔🌱

Have you ever heard of a potato rose? 🥔🌹🤔 Evidently a potato makes a good rooting medium when propagating rose stems 🤷🏽‍♂️ We also added some honey to the tip of the stem in order to ward off infection and stimulate root growth 🍯 I’m going to give this a 50/50 chance of survival but I’m excited to see the results! ☺️ #potatorose #rose #potato #propagationtips #propagation #garden #gardening #tip #tips #stem #rosebush #roses #roses🌹 #plant #plants #experiment #funfacts #educational #diy #farm #farmer #farming #flower #flowers #gardentips #root #roots #plantsmakepeoplehappy #theshilohfarm

When you peel a potato, you lose up to 50% of its total fiber, a significant portion of its potassium, and much of its iron and antioxidant compounds, which are concentrated in and just beneath the skin. When you peel a Kiwi, you lose 30–50% of potential fiber, 32% of vitamin E, and 34% of folate intake compared to eating it unpeeled. When you peel a carrot, you remove a concentrated layer of antioxidants and phytonutrients, including a portion of its beta-carotene and polyphenols, which are found in higher amounts in the outer peel. When you peel a cucumber, you reduce its fiber content, remove much of its vitamin K, and lose several antioxidants that are concentrated in the darker green outer skin.
