NIOh, there’s nothing is more curious than a goblin in the corner of the ring! Is your horse terrified of getting too close to a bush or a stack of jumps that they’ve passed a million times?
One thing you have to remember is that horses are animals of prey, so they are constantly looking for a hidden threat. This is why big loud garbage trucks don’t get a glance, but a leaf falling from a tree will.
Their sense of smell and hearing are magnified much more than ours and can detect sounds from 2.8 miles away!
River is a relatively brave horse so when she stops to look, I try to find the ‘threat’ too. If possible, we then approach it to learn it’s nothing to be scare of. ☺️
Trust and confidence are major building blocks to a brave horse. Terrifying them until they submit will lose a lot of ‘trust’ dollars from your ‘relationship’ bank account. Treats and reassurance works faster and stays longer through new found confidence.
