Midnight Garden began as a major public artwork in collaboration with the @buffaloakgartmuseum. That project opened the door to a residency where I spent my days inside the print studio at @mirabo.press, working closely with their remarkable team @rachelshelton_ and @bobflemingus to hand-print a massive-sized piece, one layer at a time.
For years, I’ve wanted to explore what happens when screenprinting steps outside familiar formats. Many artists and studios focus on standard print sizes — and with good reason. They’re practical, collectible, and easy to live with. But for this project, I felt compelled to follow the scale and energy of the original mural and see how far we could take the medium without losing its precision or elegance.
That challenge became the heart of this piece. At 47 inches tall, Midnight Garden pushes the limits of traditional screenprinting while staying fully rooted in its craftsmanship. With every pull, Mirabo Press navigated the physicality, alignment, and complexity that come with a print of this scale — and found so much joy and stress in stretching what the process can hold.
Drawing inspiration from Art Deco rhythm and architecture, I imagined a figure who inhabits this nocturnal world with both power and softness, echoing the atmosphere of the larger installation. In the studio, we translated that vision into a multi-layered screenprint that feels alive — something you can live with on your wall, yet still carries the presence of something much larger.
A deep thank you to the teams at @mirabo.press and the @buffaloakgartmuseum for helping bring this idea to life and for expanding my sense of what’s possible within the tradition of fine art printmaking.
