Imagine dropping a needle onto a surface with evenly spaced parallel lines. If the needle’s length equals the distance between the lines, the chance it crosses a line depends on two things: 1. The angle the needle lands at 2. The position of its center When you repeat this drop many times, the average probability of the needle crossing a line becomes 2 divided by π. That means: Probability = 2 / π ≈ 0.636 So even without drawing a circle, π emerges from randomness, hidden in the geometry of falling needles. In a simple random walk, each step is independent and has a small random change, such as moving one unit to the left or right with equal probability. After a large number of steps, the final position of the walker depends on the cumulative effect of all these random movements. While each individual step is unpredictable, the overall distribution of possible final positions begins to form a smooth bell-shaped pattern centered around the starting point. Most paths remain relatively close to the origin, while fewer paths end up very far away. This behavior is closely connected to the central limit theorem, which states that the sum of many independent random variables tends to follow a normal distribution. In a random walk, the final position after many steps is essentially the sum of all the individual step movements. As the number of steps increases, the distribution of these summed outcomes becomes increasingly well approximated by the normal distribution. This is why the bell curve appears so frequently in processes involving accumulated randomness, from particle diffusion in physics to noise in measurement systems and fluctuations in financial markets.
