ANHow I got my job in Tokyo 🇯🇵 (as a Software Engineer)
In short? I got in through campus placement.
Now, that might not apply to many of you—but hear me out.
This story is about rejections, strategy, and showing up again and again.
If you’re still in tech college, read this.👇
1. I graduated from IIIT Delhi in May 2024 (CS + Design).
Internship season- In my 2nd year, I applied like crazy—Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, Atlassian… these are just the big names. I don’t even remember how many times I was rejected xD. Applied to all as everyone does in the internship season!
Got rejected again and again—coding rounds, interviews, everywhere.
2. The IBM internship (kind of) saved me.
After 2 months, I got a 3-month NLP research internship at IBM Research Lab, Bangalore.
But I still had no idea if it would convert to a full-time role.
3. By 3rd year, placement season started—and I was clueless.
I came back to Delhi in July after 2 months of interning, and rejections continued.
My IBM internship wasn’t over yet, so I didn’t even have clarity on a return offer.
4. Then came the unexpected—A Japanese company visited our campus.
It came for hiring from IIIT-D, NSUT, DTU, and IIT-D.
I spoke to every senior who got in the company before me—about tests, interviews, salary, taxes, everything.
Smart prep helps.
5. The process:
✅ 4 online tests: 3 aptitude, 1 easy DSA
✅ 4 interviews: HR-style, no DSA. Focused on tech + business interest
✅ Final round: face to face, with leadership
6. Got the offer in August 2023.
Then attended on site Japanese & tech training by the company for 3 months till September, 2024.
Now? I live and work in Tokyo.
Mind you, Campus placements involve a lot of luck.
Because let’s be honest—everyone works hard.
You’ve got to work smart and show up again and again.
Eventually, luck finds the ones who stay in the game.
