You asked, ‘but why do I get so defensive?’ It’s an important question! And sometimes we might not even know the WHY. What we do know? The more defensive you get, the more likely you will spin in negative communication cycles, only to be left feeling unheard, frustrated, and more disconnected. 👉 Defensiveness is the response to feeling attacked. It’s an attempt to protect the self. Here’s the key piece - the attack might be PERCEIVED - and the other person is not actually trying to attack you. If you find yourself getting defensive, here are some ideas to change what is happening for you: ✨ Explore your why. Did you have to defend yourself as a kid? In a previous relationship? Were your feelings and needs seen and validated? Or dismissed? ✨ Practice seeing your partner for what is really happening. Is what they just said a true attack? Or are they trying to express something? You can also ask them to restate what they just said if you aren’t sure. ✨ PAUSE. If you’ve been here for awhile, you know the pause. Take a breath. A sip of water. Ask for a moment to reflect on something. ✨ Practice receiving feedback - AND reminding yourself that this has nothing to do with your lovability. Don’t get too excited…@drnoellesantorelli was just visiting NYC, but it felt like a full-circle moment. @drrachelnyc and I met 23 years ago as research assistants at the @nyulangone NYU Child Study Center, then headed off to different graduate programs in different cities. Over the years, we stayed connected (thank you, social media!), and now our paths have merged once again - two psychologists and two moms navigating public-facing work as psychologists and social media in ways nobody prepared us for. (They definitely didn’t teach this part in grad school 😉) There’s something special about growing up in this field side-by-side - from before grad school to the work we both do now. No competition. No comparison. Just two humans cheering each other on, supporting the work we each do, and lifting our communities higher ❤️ And… this won’t be the last you will see of us together!
