JUThe Antaresia genus consists of four species! The Children’s python (Antaresia childreni), the Stimson’s python (Antaresia stimsoni), the spotted python (Antaresia maculosa), and the pygmy python (Antaresia perthensis)!
.
All of these snake species are in my opinion some of the best pet reptiles for reptile keepers of all levels! Especially for beginners!
.
SIZE: Antaresia species rarely exceed 1.5 meters, with spotted pythons being the largest, and pygmy pythons being the smallest. Did you know that pygmy pythons are actually the worlds smallest python?? The small size of these species makes them easy to house and handle! An adult Antaresia can be housed in a minimum of 60cm L x 45cm W x 45cm H enclosure!
.
TEMPERAMENT: Antaresia species usually have pretty good temperaments! While hatchlings can be flighty and nippy, they usually grow out of this and it’s nothing constant handling can’t fix! Sometimes adult Antaresia can be a bit food motivated and mistake your hand for food, this can be easily avoided by simply ceasing handling on feeding day, and by using a snake hook to get the snake out of its enclosure!
.
AVAILABILITY: Antaresia species are quite readily available in the reptile market in Australia! Breeders such as myself (Jurassic Wildlife), Snake Sanctum, Cold Blooded Creatures, Mighty Morphin Aussie Reptile and more, sell Antaresia species and a variety of morphs! Antaresia species are also relatively cheep, although it does depend on the morph…Wild type morphs sell for around $200!
