As you might have seen in my earlier post, my first map in this year’s map challenge, the point map, displays the locations of sports, healthcare, and pub establishments throughout Budapest.

Day 2 is usually about line strings, where I typically go back to my roots and create a road network visualization. This year as well.
So in this piece, I map out road traffic accidents using interactive Python dataviz tools and local GIS data. Once following my tutorial, we will create an interactive road network map that visualizes accident statistics at the road segment level, using spatial data originally sourced from a local statistical office. This tutorial covers large-scale visualization (nearly 100,000 road segments), so it is gonna be super detailed, pretty, and informative!

Day 7 - accessibility. For this map, I visualized how walkable New York City - Manhattan, is from each subway station using open GTFS data and Python.
Using Pandana for network-based accessibility, I built color-graded isochrone maps for the accessibility range of every station in the NYC subway system, marking each point available within the same amount of time with the same color. Each frame in the animation adds 5 seconds of walk time, showing how accessible the surrounding area becomes as time increases.
Such walkability maps, particularly useful for urban planning, quickly highlight accessibility gaps and redundancies as well as the spatial reach of public transit infrastructure.
