ILWhite gays in Seattle have to stop pretending queerness automatically equals awareness. Being LGBTQIA+ does not exempt you from racism or erase the privilege you still hold as white people. Intersectionality isn’t optional; it’s reality.
Racism shows up when Black women and Black trans women are copied, their culture is consumed, and their brilliance is used for entertainment (and almost always used incorrectly). Only to be dismissed, ignored, or erased in the same breath from Queer spaces.
Racism also shows up in “compliments” that fetishize queer Asians, reducing us to aesthetics or fantasies, or treating us as invisible altogether. A conversation I have much experience and knowledge on for another time.
There’s work to do. Read more. Listen more. Sit with perspectives that aren’t centered on you. Enough with your checkbox activism. Putting up a flag doesn’t erase Queer histories built from the resilience of Black and Brown communities. Accountability is part of community and it’s time to do better.

LIHi 👋🏽 I’m Dulce and, guilty as charged, I do say these ‘terrible’ things to my clients as a queer latine therapist:
🫶🏽 We can love our culture and be harmed by some aspects of it too
🫶🏽 You don’t have to come out to your family for your queerness to be valid.
🫶🏽 Being the eldest daughter in an immigrant family can have a deep impact on our mental health.
🫶🏽 Taking care of people isn’t the only way to show (or receive) love.
🫶🏽 Being openly queer doesn’t make you less brown.
🫶🏽 Celebrating your Queerness looks different to you than it does to your family.

Here’s the truth: queer joy isn’t inappropriate. Depictions of queer identity aren’t “mature content”. And teens who are LGBTQ+ deserve visibility, not a digital curtain pulled in front of their faces 🏳️🌈
We can keep young people safe without teaching them that some kinds of love or some kinds of people are “too much”. Safety shouldn’t mean erasure. ✊✨

LEIch hab lange geglaubt, Professionalität heißt, einen Teil von mir auszublenden. Im Büro nicht zu “laut” zu sein, nicht zu queer wirken. Ob das Outfit „zu viel“ ist.
Und jedes Mal zieht sich etwas im Körper zusammen… ganz leicht, aber spürbar.
Heute weiß ich, dass es für dieses Phänomen sogar einen wissenschaftlichen Begriff gibt. Es nennt sich “Heteroprofessionalism”, die unausgesprochene Regel, dass „seriös“ und „cis-hetero“ irgendwie zusammengehören. Dass man sich nur dann professionell verhält, wenn man sich anpasst.
Ich hab das jahrelang mitgemacht, bis ich gemerkt hab, wie viel Energie mich dieses Maskieren kostet.
Wie erschöpft man wird, wenn man acht Stunden am Tag auf Sicherheit und Angepasstheit achtet.
Heute ist mein Ziel nicht mehr, überall reinzupassen, sondern Räume zu schaffen, in denen wir nicht mehr überlegen müssen, wer wir bei der Arbeit sind, sondern einfach da sein dürfen. 🌈
