I’m often asked whether I sell the things I make and I mostly don’t. And the few times Ive tried to explain the why, I always feel like it’s being perceived that I’m full of myself when I explain the actual cost. Like being compensated for the materials and also my time is something to be embarrassed about. And we always undervalue our time. Like all of us do it. As if knowing our worth is egotistical or something. It’s just a weird uncomfortable tango when pricing an item, so I don’t. I apppaud @karleeporterdesign for this video because it’s such important information for all of us to recognize, makers and buyers alike. Love you mean it. #quiltersofinstagram #quiltersgonnaquilt

If you agree, my guess is you probably learned to sew garments before you learned to quilt. My mom taught me how to sew when I was a little girl and we practiced with pajama pants and skirts that always called for pressing seams open. When I learned to quilt, I just couldn’t get the hang of doing it any other way. I love how flat my quilt top is when it’s pressed! Tell me below, are you a press seams open or press to the dark side kind of quilter?

1. Starch and press my fabric before I cut Crisp fabric = better accuracy, less fighting later. 2. Use the right needle for the job Universal is not a personality trait 😅 Microtex when I need precision. 3. Check my 1/4” seam allowance before I start Because “I’ll fix it later” is a big lie. 4. Chain piece whenever possible Less stopping, less thread waste, faster everything. 5. Trim and square as I go (sometimes 🫣) I am not leaving chaos for future me to deal with. 6. Press intentionally (not just iron randomly) Direction matters. Seams should work with me, not against me. 7. Use pins or clips when it actually matters Not everywhere… just where it saves me from ripping later. 8. Slow down at important points Points, intersections, bulky seams—this is not the time to floor it. (Even though I have a need for speed 💨) 9. Let go of perfection where it doesn’t matter If you can’t see it from 3 feet away, I’m moving on. 10. Not let the quilt police bully me 👏 My quilt. My rules. My joy. #quilting #quiltersofinstagram #treelinequilting

I was always taught that I could achieve whatever I set my mind to as long as I worked really, really hard. Overachieving kept me safe. It’s how I approached everything. It’s how I approached teaching. And then I burned out. I’m not sure if there are words for how much shame I felt in letting myself and my students down. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in the three years since I left the classroom. Right now I’m coming to terms with the fact that I want, more than anything, to do work that I love full time. I want to make and create art slowly, with kindness towards myself, the earth, and humans around me, in a way that supports and sustains me financially. The first person to tell me this isn’t possible? 🙋‍♀️(me) And you know the scariest part? If I’ve learned anything over the past few years and months, overworking isn’t going to get me there. It’s just going to make me really, really tired. And sick. And most likely sad. So I’m entering the unknown and as much as my stubborn, self-conscious self would never, I’ll start by admitting that I can’t do it alone and I’d love if you came along. #careerchange #artist #slowmoments #quiltersofinstagram #selfhealing

This up-cycled ensemble from @after_always_apparel is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and I this is my life stat. But also a quilter, knowing how much work that goes into our quilts, it hurts a little to watch it being cut up. But that only last like 5 seconds and then I get over it because I know this quilt probably would have ended up in a landfill or in a pet crate if new life wasn't breathed into it like it has been here. So for some quilts, this is the life-cycle, where someone rescues it, repurposes it, and introduces quilting to a whole new audience. And we all need to be okay with that because then we'd miss out on appreciating this magic! And as an owner of up-cycled quilt clothing, omg it's legit some of my favorite stuff I own and gets way more visibility and use than the quilts when they were stacked in a closet. Love you mean it. And looooooove this, so follow @after_always_apparel because his entire feed is 🔥! #upcycledclothes #quiltersofinstagram
