At it’s core, Codependency stems from a lack of Self. And so it doesn’t matter actually how it manifests for you in behavior. The recovery is all linked to building a solid sense of and relationship to that capital “S” Self. So every time you listen to yourself and act on what you truly want, desire, feel, need - you’re telling that small muted and greyed out sense of self that you are there to listen, you are there to learn, that you trust you, and that you’ve got you. And every time you do that, that quiet voice gets louder. That connection gets stronger. That inner knowing - ie the relationship to that sense of Self - grows.

Which means we often see the worst in each other today… because we’re allllllll just trying to protect ourselves from past hurts that feel very much alive *right now*. I hope you go out into your day with loved ones, and family, remembering that many things are not personal, but to also take care of yourself and have *boundaries* to protect your peace instead of making yourself small. Just type the word "workshop" if you want to come! It's the last one of the year so I hope to meet you there. Codependency doesn't mean you're broken or pathological. It means you learned to survive by making yourself small, useful, and always focusing on others' needs because that's what kept you safe. You're not disordered. You're adapted to dysfunction. Hear me out. Maybe you grew up in an environment where your needs didn't matter or they were actively punished. You learned that love meant taking care of others, that your value came from being useful, and that having boundaries made you selfish. So, you developed codependency as a brilliant survival strategy for an environment where it was dangerous to be yourself. The therapy world, the self-help world, the coaching world can sometimes pathologize codependency as if there's something wrong with us. But we're not broken here. You're responding exactly as you were trained to respond. The issue isn't that you're codependent. It's that you're still using childhood survival strategies in adult relationships today where it no longer serves you. I know. Let's take a deep breath here. God. I'm here to create a calmer, kinder, brighter world. And that starts with us, this world inside. You're not defective. You learned these patterns for good reasons. Now you get to learn new ones. Boundaries, prioritizing your needs, existing without constantly managing others. You're not fixing what's broken. You're updating what worked then to what works now. How to get out of “victim mode” in life + business ↴ Victim mode for me looks like not recognizing the choices I have in the moment, it looks like giving my power to the circumstances or other people. This can happen in both life and business.. but I’ve found something that works really well to get me out of it. While this method won’t work 100% of the time, it’s been one of the fastest ways I’ve been able to shake this mindset and step back into the control I do have within my life. Step 1: imagine yourself and your life as the main character in a story you’re highly invested in Step 2: zoom out and imagine yourself as the reader/observer of that story and ask yourself what you’re rooting for that main character to do. What would be the next move you would be elated to see that character do? Step 3: make that move to the best of your ability. You are the main character of your life, you are the observer of your story, you are the liver of it.. and remember that you’re also the co-writer (of course there are outside factors and divine intervention that seems to be writing the story side by side). As someone who has loved an addict, I swear by one rule: break the cycle of codependency. For years, I thought addiction was his problem. The drinking. The lies. The chaos. But the truth I had to face, often painfully is that addiction thrives in a family system. And I was part of that system. My constant monitoring, rescuing, and covering up felt like love, but it was also feeding the disease. It nearly broke me to realize that while I didn’t cause his drinking, I was still responsible for my part in the dynamic. I had to learn that my job wasn’t to fix him it was to take responsibility for myself. To choose boundaries over control. To choose peace over chaos. To stop cosigning the addiction with my silence. This was the hardest truth to accept: love does not mean losing yourself to someone else’s disease. Real love, the kind that heals and begins with reclaiming yourself.
