BRUnderstanding the Babinski Reflex: Why It Matters and How to Help 👣
Ever noticed your child’s toes flaring up when you stroke their foot? This might be due to an active Babinski Reflex, which ideally should integrate by 12 months of age.
How to Check for the Babinski Reflex🔍
Start at the Heel: Use your finger to gently stroke from the heel along the outside edge of the foot.
Watch the Toes: In babies, the toes will naturally flare up. However, after 12 months, the toes should curl down. If they still flare up, it indicates the reflex is active.
Why It Matters: An unintegrated Babinski Reflex can interfere with how the brain processes sensory input from the feet, affecting balance and coordination. This can lead to tripping, falling, or rolling ankles.
Simple Exercise to Help Integrate the Reflex:👣
Brush the Feet: Use a soft brush to stroke from the heel to the toes. This stimulates the feet and helps switch off the reflex.
Regular Checks: Continuously check and retest to monitor progress.
Consistent stimulation can aid in integrating the reflex, improving your child’s balance and reducing the risk of falls, rolled ankles and trips.
