Japan is working on developing a new generation of earthquake-resistant buildings that can actually 'float' when an earthquake strikes. When shaking starts, the entire building is lifted off the ground, helping it avoid violent vibrations. This technology relies on an advanced system of seismic isolation using air. Once the sensors detect an earthquake, high-pressure air is pumped down the building in 0.5 seconds, rising several centimeters from the ground and temporarily separates from vibrations, to slide over an airplane until movement stops. This technology has already been tested in research centers and small commercial buildings, alongside highly sensible motion sensors capable of detecting the finest tectonic vibrations from deep in the Earth. This "hanging foundation" dramatically reduces damage by avoiding violent side vibrations. It's almost imaginative engineering - buildings don't resist earthquakes, they rise above them.
