Wearing the Richard Mille RM 033 Extra Flat was an experience that deepened my appreciation for the brand in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve admired Richard Mille since I first saw an ad for the RM 001 back in 2002—“A Racing Machine on the Wrist.” That bold vision, merging Formula 1 engineering with haute horology, felt revolutionary then and still defines Mille’s philosophy today: uncompromised performance, cutting-edge materials, and mechanical art built for extreme conditions.
The RM 033, introduced in 2011, is unlike most of Mille’s watches. It’s round, ultra-thin, and time-only—an understated design from a brand known for its high-octane complexity. Measuring 45.7 mm across but just 6.3 mm thick, it’s Mille’s slimmest creation ever. I initially worried it would dwarf my 6.75-inch wrist, but I was completely wrong. Thanks to the case’s pronounced curvature and lightweight titanium construction, it sat perfectly, hugging my wrist comfortably all week. The rubber strap and deployant clasp are among the best I’ve ever worn, combining flexibility with luxury.
The case finishing is exceptional—fine vertical brushing, mirror-polished bevels, and high-polish spline screws that catch the light beautifully. My only gripe: the underside edges of the bezel and caseback are a bit sharp, surprising for a watch of this level. The sapphire dial reveals the partially skeletonized movement beneath translucent Roman numerals, with white gold dauphine hands that gleam brilliantly, like tiny lightsabers when they catch the light.
Inside beats the Caliber RMXP1, a 2.6 mm-thick automatic movement with a platinum micro-rotor. Built by Vaucher but extensively reworked to Mille’s specifications, it features a free-sprung balance wheel and titanium bridges coated in Titalyt® and PVD for strength and contrast. It’s a technical marvel—light, strong, and beautifully finished.
The RM 033 combines Mille’s trademark innovation with true wearability—a watch that feels as advanced as it looks. It’s distinctive, flawlessly built, and a joy to wear. If only the price were lower, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
