You should.
You might have this issue because you pull the handle too far back, trying to get as much length as possible.
And because your core can’t support you, you rely on the foot straps to hold you on the machine.
This might be useful when sprinting, but it signals core weakness at lower rates.
Rowing feet out gives you a chance to strengthen your core and find the upper range of your effective length.
Then when you put your feet back in, you can stick with that effective length.
Split is a function of force in the handle, stroke length, and stroke rate. If you can generate more force than the loss of length takes away, then you’ll be faster.
Measure and see for yourself.
