I could spend hours watching my artisans work, simply being around them and learning from their hands. Today I want to introduce you to Cristina, our master buttonhole maker. She explains that she uses two different kinds of silk thread: a lighter one for lightweight jackets, and a heavier one for heavier cloths. She tells us that each buttonhole takes around 20 minutes to complete — which means nearly 4 hours of work only for the buttonholes of a single-breasted jacket. While carefully adjusting a jacket fresh from its second fitting, still lightly basted, he tells me he’s refining “the lower side,” spotted during the fitting, and is now reshaping the shoulder.
