On this day in 1960… a 6-year-old Black girl walked into a school that swore she didn’t belong.
But she walked anyway.

Crowds screamed at her.
They spat.
They held signs telling her to go home.
She kept walking.
.
Her name was Ruby Bridges —
only six,
but braver than every adult shouting at her.

Every morning before school, she prayed:
“Please God… forgive them.
They don’t know what they’re doing.”

When she entered the building, every white parent pulled their child out.
Ruby sat alone.
No friends.
No classmates.
One teacher.
.
Her father lost his job.
Her family suffered.
But they never pulled her back.

Because she walked…

There is actually a film that was released in 1998 based on the story of Ruby Bridges. A Florida school district has actually banned the movie from being shown to its students, after a parent complained earlier this month that the film might teach students about white people hating Black people….

Ruby Bridges was just 6 years old when her life changed forever in 1960. Because of new desegregation laws in the U.S., she was chosen to attend an all-white school in New Orleans called William Frantz Elementary. Every morning, she walked into that school with four federal marshals because angry adults stood outside yelling at her and threatening her. Some parents were so against her being there that they pulled their kids out of school completely.
What happened inside the school was even quieter and sadder. For almost a whole year, Ruby sat alone in a classroom. No other children were allowed in because their parents refused to send them. Only one teacher, Barbara Henry, agreed to teach Ruby. At that age, Ruby didn’t really understand why people were so angry at her. She thought maybe she had done something wrong, not realizing it was about race.
People later noticed something unusual about Ruby. As she walked into school every day, she sometimes talked to herself. Many assumed she was scared, but she was actually praying for the people yelling at her, asking God to forgive them. Her family suffered too her father lost his job, and her grandparents were pushed off their farm just because Ruby went to that school.
Ruby grew up, finished her education, and chose to speak about what she went through. Her story was later shown in Norman Rockwell’s painting “The Problem We All Live With.” Today, Ruby Bridges is still alive, still talking about education and racism, and reminding people that this history isn’t distant it happened to a child, and it wasn’t that long ago.
