The marathon traces its roots back to ancient Greece and the legend of Pheidippides, a messenger said to have run from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens in 490 BC to announce victory over the Persians. While historians debate the exact details of the story, it inspired the creation of the marathon race at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens.
The official marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 km) wasn’t standardised until the 1908 London Olympics, when the course was extended so it could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box. Since then, marathons have grown from elite athletic contests into global mass-participation events, with major races like London, Boston and New York attracting tens of thousands of runners each year. What began as an ancient legend has become one of the world’s most recognised endurance challenges.
