VAHere’s a little how to, on how I make my pour overs! I actually learned this technique by watching @potsbyteri do this with her Berry Bowls and I never went back! It feels like I waist so much less clay than trimming away for a foot. Do you other potters out there use the same technique?

POThere was a time when I thought good work meant perfect control. Evenness and clean lines, with no visible trace of the hands that made it.
But handmade work isn’t meant to look identical. It’s meant to feel alive. To hold the story of how it came to be.
Now I’m more interested in what happens when I let the process show. Letting the glaze move on its own, and the fingerprints stay. Letting each piece loudly carry a quiet record of touch, time, and choice.
My role is to shape the form and choose the glaze with care. But how it finally settles is a conversation between each dip, each drip, and time; our quiet, wiser collaborator who ultimately decides.
Maybe that’s why it matters so much right now to make things slowly, intentionally, and by hand.

STTextured coffee cups on the wheel look simple until you try to make the walls move without collapsing.
For this one, I threw the cup with thicker walls than usual and used the No. 9 wooden rib from Garrity Tools to push the clay into smooth waves. The rib is quite sharp, so the trick is simple: keep the clay well lubricated and don’t rush the pressure. Too dry and it drags, too thin and the wall folds.
This kind of texture changes the whole look and feel of a coffee cup. The surface catches the glaze differently and gives the piece a tactile grip when you hold it.
The glazed version is coming soon and I’m curious to see how the waves break under the glaze.

FLI think one of the most underrated skills when it comes to making pottery is glazing. Coating pots completely evenly? That’s a real challenge. Dipping pots and manoeuvring them around so that the drying glaze settles in a consistent film around the entire piece? That’s absurdly difficult. I think this process is simply seen as pot goes in, pot comes out, done, yet in reality it’s a far more nuanced procedure and one that requires endless trial and error. For instance, with these mugs, it’s taken me a good few years to get a point where I can glaze them with an almost perfectly even coat, save for the eventual tong marks.
Think of the glaze here as having the consistency of double cream, once the object is removed from the bucket the excess obviously wants to droop and fall off the vessel, this can create streaks and thick or thin patches is simply ‘allowed’ to happen, thus I keep the mug moving in such a way that even if the glaze, the cream, does move, it still eventually settles into a consistent layer all the way around, around the handle, around the base and even the lip. The more inconsistencies there are the more time I’m going to have to spend tidying up the vessels once the glaze has dried out.

AAThese pour overs are the most trimming intensive piece I make. The foot ring in particular requires the removal of a lot of clay.

CHHow do we feel about this tea set?
I was really inspired by @hashawpots and @victorng.ceramics at on of our last markets to try a warped, distorted shape. It’s not up to their quality but it was a ton of fun dropping and kicking this poor guy around. I think this is also solid proof that glaze covers a multitude of sins
