The Temple of Segesta, located in northwestern Sicily, is one of the best-preserved examples of Doric architecture in the ancient Mediterranean. Built in the late 5th century BCE by the Elymians, an indigenous people of western Sicily, the temple reflects both Greek artistic influence and local cultural identity. Although never completed—the inner cella and roof were likely never constructed—it stands in remarkable condition, with 36 limestone columns still rising against the surrounding hills. Segesta was long a center of conflict and diplomacy between Greeks, Carthaginians, and later Romans, who recognized its strategic and cultural importance. Da una prima ricognizione, per fortuna, è stato possibile verificare che non sussistono danni ai siti monumentali: il tempio, il teatro e la casa del Navarca sono rimasti illesi. Ma se, come sembra, il rogo è stato causato da una mano criminale, si tratta di un gesto gravissimo che va condannato con forza perché ha messo a rischio l’incolumità di chi vive nelle zone limitrofe e ha recato un grave danno al nostro inestimabile patrimonio storico-artistico. Mi auguro che si possa risalire al più presto ai responsabili”. Così il governatore Renato Schifani. Le immagini dal drone dell’area mostrano gli effetti delle fiamme.
