Aluminum + Copper Sulfate Reaction (Homeschool Notes) 📓 For this project, Jay poured a hot mixture of CuSO₄ (copper sulfate) and NaCl (sodium chloride) over Al (aluminum) foil to watch how different metals react with each other. What’s Happening: The blue CuSO₄ solution is full of Cu²⁺ (copper ions). Aluminum is more reactive than copper, so once the liquid hits the foil, the aluminum starts taking the copper’s place. That’s why the blue color fades and you start seeing reddish‑brown Cu (copper) forming on the foil. Why It Looks Like the Aluminum Is Melting: It isn’t melting from heat. The Cl⁻ (chloride ions) from the NaCl help break down the thin protective layer on the aluminum. Once that layer opens up, the reaction speeds up and the foil starts breaking apart. It can look like it’s disappearing, but it’s actually dissolving into the solution. The reaction gives off heat, so steam and bubbling show up right away. How It Works: • CuSO₄ dissolves and releases Cu²⁺ ions • NaCl adds Cl⁻ ions that weaken the aluminum’s surface • Aluminum gives up electrons easily • Copper ions take those electrons and turn into solid Cu • Heat is released as everything reacts What Jay Could Observe: • The blue color getting lighter • Copper forming on the foil • Aluminum thinning and breaking down • Heat and steam rising • Bubbles as the surface reacts He also tried the same setup with room‑temperature water. The reaction still happened, just much slower, and it spread out over a wider area instead of reacting fast in one spot. A good reminder that temperature changes the speed of chemical reactions. Why This Matters: This reaction is a simple way to see how metals behave differently, how electrons move, and how heat can be released during a chemical change.
