Shearing end of Feb…must be mad! I’ve decided to shear now because: Reduces the risk of cast sheep Cleaner ewes at lambing The ewes will feel the temperature change so should look after lambs better in wet/cold weather One less fly treatment needed We will now shear every 6 months rather than June then Sept No need to crutch pre lambing. I’m sure there are more pros but this is what I have so far!! We used cover combs to shear them so leaves a little extra fleece on the ewes and they will spend the next two weeks in well sheltered fields with plenty of trees and cover to keep them protected incase the weather changes! ‘Tis shearing season here at RFR and we are working away at the 70+ goats I need to shear for their mohair ✂️ Harlow is a 3 year old colored Angora wether and is an absolute teddy bear. We raise these goats for their mohair which is a luxurious natural fiber. It is soft, silky, and stronger than steel 😱 Mohair grows an inch per month and we shear twice per year (spring and fall) when the mohair is around 6 inches long. Each fleece weighs about 8-10 pounds. We use all our mohair for our knitwear company @shopcaprine where we make it into socks and throws 🤩 However, Harlow here produces gorgeous locks that are perfect for my my mom to lockspin with on a spinning wheel and then weave into mohair rugs on our giant floor loom 👏 I like to shear this way as it’s very low stress and nobody gets hurt. It takes me about 20 minutes per goat. We then trim their hooves, give them vaccines, and do any other maintenance they may need. 🫶

Shearing day was this past weekend, and it was a huge success. Our shearing team gave 27 rescued animals professional haircuts and they all seemed relieved right away. This week is quite warm and sunny so the timing was perfect. 🌞 Shearing is so important for fibered friends not only because we need to get them comfortable for summer, but also because when someone is under six inches of fiber, it’s tricky to see the condition of their body and any other issues that might be going on. We were really pleased that everyone looked like they were in excellent shape and we didn’t find anything we weren’t expecting. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to make this day a success. We have sent everyone personalized thank yous and hope we didn’t miss anyone, but if we did please know how grateful we always are for your support. It makes this level of care possible for more than 100 rescued animals, many of whom have never received care like this before coming to @happycompromisefarm. On another note, we have gotten so many requests for updates on particular animals and please know we will post them as soon as we can. April is about as busy as it gets here as it’s planting season on the farm, and we are running on empty already. We always post updates, they just take a little while sometimes as the actual hands-on work comes first. Alpačí vlna velmi dobře udržuje teplo a pokud se vlna neodstraní, zvířatům při vysokých letních teplotách hrozí přehřátí 🥵 Každý chovatel by měl své alpaky stříhat jednou ročně na konci jara, aby byla zvířátka zdravá a spokojená 😇 Naše stříhání šlo skvěle a Bella s Esmeraldou si teď mohou užívat teplé počasí naplno 🥳 Vypadají legračně a neskutečně roztomile, nemyslíte? ❤️ My všichni už jsme připraveni na léto! ☀️ A co vy- už máte svůj letní sestřih 💇‍♀️💇 ~ It’s SHEARING TIME! ✂️ Our girls Bella 🦙and Esmeralda 🦙 got their summer haircut today! Diego is the youngest member of our alpaca family 🥰 and is too young to be shorn so he is still fluffy 😍 Why is it necessary to shear alpacas before the summer 🤔? Alpacas do not shed their fleece. This year’s shearing happened on a weekday afternoon, which meant some of our nursery children were lucky enough to watch the action unfold and a few parents even joined in too! As always, Farmer Brian’s grandchildren couldn’t resist getting involved and lending a helping hand and of course they loved every minute of it.
