What’s it take to keep your shoulders healthy? ✖️In general, healthy shoulders have sufficient mobility in the shoulder & thoracic spine, and STRONG, efficient, and controlled scapular stabilizers and rotator cuff muscles because this joint MOVES a lot (it needs to!). ⁣ ⁣ ✖️The serratus anterior is a major powerhouse muscle that helps to bring the shoulder blade (thr socket) forward around the ribs and upwardly rotate it while the head of the humerus (the ball) moves in it. This is ONE player they contributes to how well the shoulder blade moves to support all the great motion the shoulder can accomplish. Sometimes in cases with a bit more mobility in the shoulder/lack of strength, those with previous dislocations/episodes of instability or injuries, this pressure with pushing and floor activities can be uncomfortable if not optimally controlled. This acheyness can manifest as pain during, after, or like it needs to be stretched — but it might just be craving more stability. My left shoulder has always been a bit more susceptible to injury. I make sure this joint is working well for me by being intentional with exercises that support it, like these! ⤵️ ⬇️ these are a few options that fire up the serratus and challenge it with different angles! 1️⃣ protraction for serratus emphasis + step backs 2️⃣ walk outs (go as far as you want!) 3️⃣ arm step ups - great for gymnasts & dancers 4️⃣ Single Arm pro/retraction off block (or floor) 5️⃣ Plank rotation over arm Add depth jumps if you want 😈 Which will you try first? I say 2! ⚠️ .None of these should hurt. Wall angels are one of my favorites!✨ They’re simple, effective, and you don’t need much, just a little space to spread out.🦅 If wall angels feel impossible, it’s usually due to limited upper-spine mobility and forward head posture. Moving down to the floor reduces the demand, and adding head support allows the spine to adapt gradually. Start small! If your hands don’t make contact at first, that’s totally okay. Keep the elbows down, move slowly, and stay controlled. ⚠️As always, if you feel pain or pinching please don’t push through! You might need a little more targeted mobility work before you’re ready for this exercise 🫶🏼 I’ll be sharing release and mobility videos next week if this still feels out of reach, stay tuned. Do you have tight traps? Shoulder pain? Neck pain? 🫠 SOLUTION DOWN BELOW 👇 Rubbing and stretching the traps and shoulder muscles feels pretty good, but often only relieves pain temporarily. Ask yourself why is that area tight to begin with? Some of you might say “stress”, which tells you everything and tells you nothing at the same time. 👇 Instead, you need to understand the law of Reciprocal Inhibition, which states to relax a muscle we must turn the opposing muscle on. The stronger and more endurance that muscle has, the longer it can create a sustained relaxation of the opposing muscle. For example, when you do a biceps curl, your triceps must turn-off or deactivate to allow your elbow to bend. The same is often true with tight upper traps - when you activate your lower traps the upper trap must relax, and the longer you can hold that contraction, and the stronger the lower trap is, and the more endurance the muscle has, then the longer the you’ll feel relaxation in the upper trap. This exercise is a tiny taste of the scap scoop, which you can learn and train in our Shoulders & Arms Program. To perform this exercise, which Dr. Mike personally does 50x a day, pull the shoulder blade down, and then pull the lowest tip of the shoulder blade around to the front of the body with your serratus anterior muscle. This last part is the most difficult by far, and will need to be practiced!
