AHMedtronic (now MiniMed) is launching two brand-new CGM’s at the same time: the Simplera Sync and Instinct by Abbott sensor.
This is a big deal for Medtronic users because they will now, for the first time, have a choice between two very different sensors.
Quick Background:
1. Simplera Sync is the successor to the Guardian 4, taking most of its sensing technology and putting it into a modern, all-in-one form factor.
2. Instinct by Abbott is an exclusive variant of the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus that specifically integrates only with the 780G insulin pump
Main Differences:
- Instinct is the smallest sensor on the market, whereas Simplera Sync is about 60% larger
- Instinct has a 1 hour warmup; Simplera 2 hours
- Instinct has a 15 day wear period; Simpler has a 6 day wear period with 1 day grace period;
- Instinct has a MARD of 8.2%; Simplera’s is 10.2%
- Instinct does not accept finger stick calibrations; Simplera does
- Instinct is activated with smartphone; Simplera is activated directly on pump
- Both are MUCH easier to insert with one hand; no overtake required
I recommend the Instinct by Abbott for most Medtronic 780g users, but the Instinct might be worth considering for people with adhesive and/or skin issues or for people who are very happy on Guardian 4.
