THE SIPHON EFFECT - A siphon - is any of a wide variety of devices that involve the flow of liquids through tubes. In a narrower sense, the word refers particularly to a tube in an inverted "U" shape, which causes a liquid to flow upward, above the surface of a reservoir, with no pump, but powered by the fall of the liquid as it flows down the tube under the pull of gravity, then discharging at a level lower than the surface of the reservoir from which it came. scientists have believed that siphons work because of the force of atmospheric pressure. A basic siphon consists of a tube in a larger container that goes up over a hump (the edge of the container) to empty out into a container at a lower level. When liquid is sucked through the tube over the hump and begins to empty into the other container, a decrease in atmospheric pressure is caused at the highest point in the tube (where it passes over the hump). A basic fuel siphon uses only gravity and air pressure to move liquid from a container at a higher elevation to one at a lower elevation, without a pump. First the tube is filled with fuel (primed) so that air is removed from inside it. You put one end in a container higher up, and the other end in a container lower down. Gravity pulls the liquid down the tube. This creates a pressure difference, with the atmospheric pressure pushing the liquid from the higher container up into the tube, keeping the flow going.
