Pedestal rocks, also known as rock pedestals or mushroom rocks, are fascinating geological formations created through erosion. Here's how they're formed:
Formation Process:
1. Differential Erosion: Two types of rocks with varying resistance to erosion are layered or in contact.
2. Wind and Water Erosion: The softer, less resistant rock is worn away faster than the harder, more resistant rock.
3. Continued Erosion: The softer rock is eroded from beneath the harder rock, creating a pedestal-like structure.
4. Caprock Protection: The harder rock on top protects the softer rock beneath from further erosion.
Types of Pedestal Rocks:
1. Mushroom Rocks: Formed in desert environments through wind erosion.
2. Hoodoos: Formed in sedimentary rocks through water and wind erosion.

This specimen comes from the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia, an ancient piece of continental crust that began forming about 2.7 billion years ago.
It is one of the oldest enduring landmasses on Earth.
The diversity in the orbicules’ mineral composition and structure indicate that the conditions within the magma chamber where they formed changed as they grew.

DYBanded iron formation - a shoutout to the seds people. One of my favorite rocks and outcrop visits of all time.
A majority of BIFs formed during the Archean and Proterozoic- over 540 million years ago. They formed during the critical great oxidation event in Earths History- where our oxygen levels increased drastically. Oxygen played the key role in the precipitation of minerals out of our iron rich oceans and m BIF layers tell the story of the oceans transition from anoxic to oxidation conditions.
