This speed is so fast that light can circle the Earth about seven and a half times in just one second. It’s also why we can see stars that are light-years away: even though their light takes years to reach us, it’s traveling so quickly that we still receive it from across the cosmos. However, when light passes through substances like air, glass, or water, it slows down slightly. Even then, it remains far faster than sound. How Fast Does Sound Travel? Sound is very different from light. It’s a mechanical wave, meaning it needs a medium—like air, water, or a solid material—to travel.
