CA🦊🌿 Cape of Good Hope SPCA Assists Bat-Eared Fox Back to the Wild
Earlier this week, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA admitted a bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis) for a full veterinary assessment after the animal was found collapsed in a park in Milnerton.
A concerned resident had initially taken the fox to a cheetah rehabilitation centre in Paarl after discovering the animal lying in the park. The fox was reportedly easy to capture at the time, which suggested that it may have been unwell or distressed. To ensure responsible wildlife management and proper veterinary care, arrangements were made for the fox to be transferred to the SPCA for evaluation.
Our veterinarians examined the fox and were pleased to find that he was in good health - simply frightened and likely stressed from the experience. After monitoring him and ensuring he was eating normally, plans were made for his safe return to the wild.
With confirmation and approval from CapeNature, the fox was released at Blaauwberg Nature Reserve. In keeping with best ecological practice for this crepuscular species, the release took place close to dusk to give him the best chance of safely settling back into his natural environment.
This positive outcome highlights the importance of cooperation between members of the public, rehabilitation centres, veterinarians and conservation authorities in ensuring the best possible outcome for wildlife. 🦊🌿
