THSimplicity is a difficult thing to achieve because there are no substitutes. The simplicity of a single spey cast—off both left and right shoulders—on a river, without a sustained anchor or any other gimmicks, is one of the most underrated casts. It is a skill that most beginners do not train nearly hard enough because it is easier to bypass timing with circle Cs, snaps, and other techniques. Simple enough on a casting pool, but far more challenging in an actual fishing scenario, where you need to position the line from the dangle back across again.
We all tend to do too much.
Today, I had a lot of fun picking up an integrated line on a much lighter rig. What a fun stick after working cold, deep waters earlier in the season with 14.5–15 ft rigs. Fishing both banks at @bywellsalmonfishing with the Nextcast FFF 500-grain integrated line and a 15 ft leader on a 12.7 ft CND rod has been a refreshing change. I am still a bit too forceful over my non-dominant (left) side, but salmon fishing here will certainly humble my eagerness soon enough—and leave me sore in the process.
One thing I cannot stress enough, and it has made my life a million times easier: Pick the line up from the water, build up tension, lock your hands and arms in, and rotate your body into position. Let your body do the work. Train this and thank me later.

RAWhen steelhead fishing turns into cutthroat fishing. Fishing dry flies for summer steelhead can be a bait-and-switch sometimes. At distance I struggle with depth perception and all rises/splashes look the same… and I’ve learned over the years that a large fish can sip and delicately swirl like a small fish and the little ones can trick you just the same. Never assume and always go back to an active fish.
Some of these cutthroat have some weight and can give a few good pulls off the reel and get the heart racing.
