NKA big female Spiny Softshell Turtle from a rocky mountain valley creek in north Georgia! These awesome turtles are pretty common in larger bodies of water in the region, but are often hard or impossible to capture. This big girl was unusually chill, and hanging out in a shallow section of creek making for an atypically easy capture and release.

These hatchlings spiny Softshell turtles are perfectly equipped to navigate and hide in their river sandbar habitat. Their heavily webbed, paddle-like feet enable them to swim very quickly, and their leathery low-profile shell allows them to slip into the sand and hide, awaiting prey and avoiding predators.

CASpiny Softshell Turtles (Apalone spinifera) are turtles that I see quite commonly in my area, but this is only the 2nd large adult I’ve gotten my hands on! They’re super shy and very fast turtles! They spend most of their day buried in the sand and under water looking for prey, sometimes coming up to bask in the sun. Thank you to @gregsturtlehaven for letting me get a video with this big girl!

GRSpiny softshells are such amazing turtles, and this year I’ve been lucky to come across quite a few in-situ. I feel like a robust spiny Softshell population coincides with a healthy aquatic ecosystem. This small male was eating a hellgrammite when found. I let him finish his lunch before filming 😂

FIAlmost bit me! Their necks are so long, and they are super fast compared to snapping turtles.
This is the first time I have ever caught one and I’ve been looking for years! Incredible pattern on their limbs and the shell was so much softer than I expected. I think I have a new favorite turtle! 🐢

We just released a Southeast Asian Softshell Turtle — a unique freshwater species known for its flat, leathery shell and snorkel-like nose! 🐢🌿
Softshell turtles are strong swimmers and spend most of their time in the rivers. Sadly, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and overharvesting of their meat.
We received the turtle from a local restaurant owner. After careful inspection, the softshell is healthy, and ready to go home 💚
