You could tell this garden near the back barn used to harvest loads of fresh food and herbs at one point. It was built with love, careful planning, irrigation and all but was forgotten about over the years and had gotten severely overgrown with hardy weeds, vines, and even small trees. I’ve been chipping away at it slowly but surely since the Fall and even whacked my eye out at one point fighting a branch. Today, I finally got to the old irrigation and weed mats to pull out and refresh before tilling! This job is not for the faint of heart but will be worth it! 🏡🪏🪴🧑‍🌾 #homesteading #gardeninglove #demolition #springplanting #sustainability

We’ve been adding wood ash to our garden about once a month to increase the soil pH, potassium, calcium and trace minerals like magnesium and phosphorus. Overall, it is a great practice to add to your garden and compost for increased nutrients come planting time! We also add chicken/dog/duck manure for extra (and free) fertilizer! Today we worked on the remediation project plot, weeding beds, topping up with compost, and getting ready for the next green manure sowings. We also laid some woodchip on the pathways which makes such a difference. Our little robin companion showed up again 🐦 It always appears when we light the fire and follows us around the garden like a tiny supervisor. We never manage to catch it on camera but today we finally did ❤️ Big thanks to @grow.ni for their continued support and to @gairdinanphobail for giving us space to grow. And also @new_leaf_compost for letting us work away at their woodchip #DivergentGrowth #GardenDay #GreenManure #CommunityGarden #RobinVisitor

Blue skies above, mud on my boots below. I spent the day laying mulch across a sea of flower beds, giving the soil a quiet blanket before spring wakes it up again. It was heavy work, slow work. The kind that leaves your muscles aching but your mind calm. Some gardens don’t need big changes, just patience and care, layer by layer. This bright day was a welcome change, for the garden, for me, and possibly the worms too, after the unending rain. 🌿

Spring is so close! But it’s not quite here yet and I am so glad. I have so much garden clean up to do. We struggle badly with Bermuda grass that tends to take the garden by the end of the year. So much of the clean up I have to do is pulling Bermuda grass. I only got about 1/5 of this garden bed donethe other day and so, I have my work cut out for me but that’s ok! This garden, even this time of year, is my happy place. In fact, I’d much rather be doing work out here at the start of March than anytime during the heat of July! I am pruning shrubs, removing dead perennial tops and removing lots and lots of wire grass knowing that it I’ll be back in August. I tend to leave my leaves in place and mulch right over them. Are you starting your garden clean up soon?
