Sensitive content warning: deceased bird. Hoopoe. This striking bird is typically found across Africa, Asia and Europe, recognisable for their distinctive crown of feathers and unusual flight beats. When fully airborne, the long stretches of its wings used to gain altitude change to shorter beats. This makes it look like a gigantic butterfly, leading to its nickname, butterfly bird. 🦋 (Highly recommend you Googling a video of it, it’s beautiful!) Though it does not breed in the UK, they can be spotted during spring migration and always delight birders when they turn up in English gardens. Fun bonus bird fact, the Hoopoe’s name is onomatopoeic, named after its soft “hoop-hoop-hoop” call. ✨ This bird might look a little tatty here, but I’m trusting the process to hopefully turn out a beautiful bird. I’ve had two Hoopoe’s sent to me over the years, but sadly neither of them were suitable for taxidermy, so, I’m really hoping I am able to mount it. This bird came from a zoo and died of natural causes. - #taxidermy #birds #ornithology #taxidermist #artist #artreels
