EV🇨🇳 China’s 广场舞 (guǎngchǎng wǔ), or “square dancing,” is an evening tradition where neighbors gather in parks and plazas to dance fitness routines together.
It’s especially popular with older women, often called “dà mā” (“aunties”), and has grown huge:
China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported over 120 million regular participants in 2023.
This square dancing movement began in the late-1990s due to economic changes that triggered mass layoffs. Group activities like square dancing offered structure, social support, and an inexpensive outlet for people.
Many square dancers meet nightly at dusk and are from older generations. ➡️ Studies suggest group square dancing can support physical and mental wellbeing.
We love to see women coming together for mutual community & wellness. 😌👯♀️💕
