The answer: B) Aircraft identification on radar.
That four digit code you dial into the transponder is how ATC separates your airplane from every other target on their screen. It ties your aircraft to your callsign altitude and intentions so controllers can track and manage traffic safely.
Squawk codes turn a moving radar blip into a known aircraft. Without it ATC loses the ability to efficiently sequence traffic provide services and maintain separation especially in busy airspace.
