HO🦠 What is African Horse Sickness?
A deadly viral disease of horses caused by an orbivirus. It affects the heart and lungs and is not transmissible to humans.
⚠️ Key Symptoms:
There are four forms—pulmonary, cardiac, mixed, and mild. The most fatal is the pulmonary form:
• 🔥 High fever (up to 41°C)
• 😮💨 Severe respiratory distress
• 💧 Frothy discharge from nostrils
• 🫀 Swelling of the face, neck, and chest
• 👁 Swelling of blood vessels and soft tissues around the eyes, lips, cheeks, and jawline
• 🐎 Sudden death in severe cases
🦟 How It Spreads:
• Transmitted by biting midges (Culicoides imicola)
• Not contagious between horses directly
• Donkeys and mules may show milder or no symptoms
⸻
🌍 Affected Regions:
• Endemic in sub-Saharan Africa
• Outbreaks reported in:
• North Africa (e.g., Morocco)
• Middle East (e.g., UAE, Saudi Arabia)
• Southern Europe (e.g., Spain 1987–1990)
⸻
✅ What To Do (Prevention & Response):
• 🛑 No cure—only supportive care
• 💉 Vaccination in endemic areas
• 🦟 Midge control: insect nets, stabling at dusk/dawn, repellents
• 🚫 Restrict horse movement during outbreaks
• 📞 Report cases immediately to authorities
