From 300k questions a month to almost zero😢 For years, Stack Overflow was the internet’s go-to place for developers to ask questions, debug code, and learn from real human answers. Then AI happened. Instead of posting questions publicly, developers started asking chatbots directly. Faster replies. No downvotes. No waiting. No formatting rules. The result? Monthly questions collapsed from hundreds of thousands to nearly nothing. But here’s the twist most people miss. Stack Overflow didn’t die. It adapted. While public activity dropped, the company quietly licensed its massive archive of human-written answers to AI labs and enterprises. Those same answers now power internal AI tools used inside companies, helping engineers get instant, trusted responses behind closed doors.So while the community side shrank, the business side grew. This isn’t the death of Stack Overflow. It’s a preview of what’s happening to every knowledge platform in the AI era. Public traffic goes down. Private AI integrations go up. The real question is no longer who gets the clicks, but who owns the data AI is trained on. And that shift is changing the internet faster than most people realize. #stackoverflow #computerscience #softwareengineer #coding #coders {stack overflow,ai,chatgpt,developer tools,programming,software engineering,ai coding,tech news,open source,developer community,ai disruption,knowledge economy,genai,enterprise ai,data licensing,ai training,programmer life,future of work,tech trends,software development}

For years, Stack Overflow was where developers asked questions and built the shared knowledge behind modern software. Now, activity has fallen to its lowest level since 2008. In its first month, the site logged 3,749 questions; last month, it recorded just 3,607. The decline has accelerated as AI coding tools change how developers seek help. Many now get instant answers from AI instead of posting questions, while others point to strict moderation and a less welcoming culture. It doesn’t mean developers have stopped learning, it shows how the way they learn is changing. Despite the forum’s decline, Stack Overflow’s annual revenue doubled to $115 million. Losses shrank from $84 million in FY2023 to $22 million after cost-cutting measures, including layoffs. The company shifted from ad revenue to enterprise solutions and licensing. 📸/Source: https://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1926661#graph / (Sherwood News) #ai #aitools #stackoverflow #chatgpt

The website every developer relied on is slowly losing traffic. Stack Overflow. For years, developers solved problems like this: Google → Stack Overflow → read answers → test code. Now the workflow looks different. Developers ask ChatGPT or AI copilots and get: • instant explanations • working code • debugging help • follow-up answers No searching. No scrolling through multiple threads. AI acts like an interactive Stack Overflow that understands context and continues the conversation. But Stack Overflow hasn’t disappeared. Its massive knowledge base still powers many AI systems today. Follow @engineerbeatsai for more AI insights. #AI #ChatGPT #StackOverflow #GenAI #AIEngineering DeveloperTools FutureOfCoding

Stack Overflow has some of the richest coding data on the internet — millions of real questions, real solutions, and real engineering knowledge. And @theprimeagen just dropped a bold take: 👉 AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and others may have used that data without permission. Whether you agree or not… This raises a huge question for developers: Who really owns the knowledge we share online? The community? The companies? Or are the AI models learning from it? One thing is clear — AI learned to code from developers, not the other way around. What do YOU think? Is this fair use or straight-up data theft? --- 💬 Comment “AI” if you think models should credit the community. 🔁 Save this for later — it’s a big conversation in tech right now. 📩 Share with a programmer friend who needs to see this. --- #ai #programmers #codinglife #technews #softwareengineering

Is it really time to say goodbye to @thestackoverflow? 😢 Stack Overflow is a community-driven question-and-answer platform where developers and programmers post technical questions and receive answers from other users. It's organized by tags and reputation points, allowing experienced users to gain credibility by contributing helpful responses. People typically use Stack Overflow by searching for error messages, asking specific questions about code bugs or implementation details, and browsing existing threads for solutions. It has long served as a go-to resource for solving coding problems, learning best practices, and engaging in peer-to-peer knowledge sharing across nearly every programming language and framework. However, it might be time to say goodbye to Stack Overflow as AI tools like ChatGPT, Deepseek, Grok, and Claude become developers' first line of support. These tools provide instant, context-aware explanations, code generation, and debugging assistance without the need to browse multiple threads or wait for human responses. Instead of piecing together partial solutions from forum posts, developers now get tailored, conversational answers in seconds. As these AI models continue to improve, the need to rely on traditional Q&A platforms is diminishing, making Stack Overflow less central in the daily workflows of many programmers.

Comment "Stack" to get the link. StackOverflow has launched its own AI chatbot. It’s literally built on 16 years of real Q&A data from over 23 million developer discussions. That means instead of giving theoretical or generic answers like most LLMs, it pulls insights directly from what real programmers have solved and debated. It’s designed to provide practical, context-aware solutions. It’s useful for debugging, learning new concepts, or understanding why a piece of code works a certain way. If you rely on AI for coding help, this AI chatbot might just replace your go-to AI models or coding assistants that provide generic solutions. #aitools #ai #developer #coding #vibecoding #chatbot #free #viral
