Nvidia-backed Starcloud has become the first company to run an AI large language model in space, using an Nvidia H100 GPU aboard its Starcloud-1 satellite to query Google’s open-source Gemma model. CEO Philip Johnston said, “This very powerful, very parameter dense model is living on our satellite,” demonstrating that orbital data centers could offer dramatically lower energy costs and constant solar power. Google DeepMind’s Tris Warkentin called the successful run “a testament to the flexibility and robustness of open models.” Starcloud plans a 5-gigawatt orbital data center and will add more Nvidia H100s and Blackwell chips in 2026. Orbital compute could support commercial and military applications, including real-time wildfire detection. The orbital data-center race is accelerating, with Google’s Project Suncatcher, Lonestar’s lunar data center, and Aetherflux’s planned 2027 orbital system.
