COHere’s the truth about gold-fill jewelry…
Let’s clear up a common jewelry misconception right now, my friends. Gold-fill is NOT the same as gold-plated — not even close. In fact, gold-filled jewelry contains almost 100% more gold than gold-plated, and the difference shows up in how long it lasts, how it wears, and how it feels against your skin.
Here’s the quick breakdown:
Gold-plated: A whisper-thin layer of gold bonded to a base metal (usually something chearper like nickel). It might be pretty at first, but it chips, fades, and tarnishes fast — exposing the base metal underneath. Picture a microscopic layer of spray paint. That’s also why it makes your skin irritated. You wear it for a short bit then it needs to be replaced. It’s quite wasteful, IMO.
Gold vermeil: Slightly thicker than plating, with a sterling silver core, but still wears down to silver over time. So you’re basically wearing gold jewelry that’s going to be silver soon. If that’s the goal, then….go for it.
Gold-fill: A hearty layer of 14k gold pressure-bonded to brass, making it durable, hypoallergenic, and far more resistant to tarnishing. By law, it must contain at least 5% 14k gold by weight — meaning it’s built to last years (or decades) with proper care. Truth is, it’s a PAIN to work with and often why most jeweler’s won’t touch the material. But, damn…it lasts!
With the cost of 14k solid gold being higher than ever, gold-fill is the sweet spot — quality, beauty, and longevity without the massive price tag. That’s why every CMD piece (unless it’s solid gold or sterling) is made with 14k gold-fill.
If you’ve been burned by plated jewelry before — literally or figuratively — gold-fill might just be your new best friend.
