MetService has delivered fresh updates on the severe weather, with more rain on its way and expected to filter down south. A red heavy rain warning remains in place for Northland east of Kaikohe from Doubtless Bay to Whangārei, until 4am tomorrow. Residents can expect a further 100-130mm of rain on top of what has already fallen. The remainder of Northland is under an orange heavy rain warning until the same time tomorrow, with a high chance of upgrading to red. Thunderstorms are possible across the region from later this afternoon. Meanwhile, an orange heavy rain warning is also in place across the Coromandel Peninsula until 6pm tomorrow, with a deluge of up to 250mm possible for the Coromandel Range. Orange heavy rain warnings are in place across large chunks of the North Island including for the Bay of Plenty west of Whakatāne, Auckland from Whangaparāoa northwards, the Hunua Ranges, Aotea Great Barrier Island and Taranaki Maunga. 🔗 Get the full story via the link in our bio.

The latest from the Met Service: Red Warning for Heavy Rain covers Northland, east of Kaikohe from Doubtless Bay to Whangārei from 4pm Wednesday afternoon to 4am Friday morning. 270–320 mm of rain expected, with potential thunderstorms. Orange Heavy Rain Warnings and Yellow Watches in place across the upper North Island. Further upgrades to Red Warnings possible for other northern regions. Orange Strong Wind Warning for Northland and Auckland, with gusts up to 120km/h. Yellow Severe Weather watches also in place for parts of the North and South Islands. Large waves are possible for eastern Northland, as well as western and eastern coastlines of the South Island

Heavy rain continues to hammer Te Tai Tokerau — and the worst may not be over yet. Overnight downpours have already pushed rivers to dangerous levels, with flooding, slips, and road closures expected to increase through today and into tomorrow. Parts of the East Coast, including Kaeo and the Bay of Islands, have taken the brunt of the weather so far. Warnings remain in place, and authorities are urging people to stay home, avoid floodwaters, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. This is a serious situation — we’ve seen before how quickly these weather events can escalate, isolating communities and putting lives at risk. We are sandwiched in between the regions forecast to bear the brunt of this front, but we still need to be prepared for some heavy rain and nasty conditions. Aotea Great Barrier Island and Whangaparāoa northwards have heavy rain warnings in place, and a strong wind warning has been issued for the whole region (see previous posts or MetService New Zealand for details). ✅Check outdoor furniture and loose items are secure ✅Clear drains and gutters on your property ✅Keep up to date with weather forecasts and plan your travel accordingly ✅Check your household emergency plan is up to date – www.aem.govt.nz/make-a-plan And remember: ❗Never walk, drive or swim in floodwaters ❗Treat power lines as live at all times ❗If you’re in an area prone to isolation or power outages, make sure your emergency kit is stocked ❗If your life or property is in danger, phone 111 ❗Report stormwater blockages to the council on 09 301 0101 ❗Report trees down on public land online – 👉 www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz, search ‘Report a Problem’. A subtropical storm has brought large downpours and strong winds to much of the country.⁠ ⁠ The Far North and Whangārei councils have declared states of emergency for seven days.⁠ ⁠ Northland residents have been urged to stay home if they can, with parts of the region cut off by flooding and a red rain warning in effect in the east until Friday morning.⁠ ⁠ Orange heavy rain and wind warnings are in place across the North Island and parts of the South Island.
