When a column carries load, that force must transfer into the surrounding masonry. If the surface is straight and smooth: The bond relies mostly on mortar adhesion Shear forces concentrate along one flat plane Cracks propagate vertically with less resistance The wall can slowly separate from the column Over time, temperature cycles, vibration, and settlement amplify this weakness. Once separation begins, repairs are no longer cosmetic. Structural wall reinforcement, column retrofitting, or masonry reconstruction can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000+, depending on severity and access. Now look at the jagged (keyed) design. Those offsets create mechanical interlocking. Instead of one flat shear plane, the load distributes through multiple angles. Cracks are forced to change direction. Shear resistance increases. Bond strength improves significantly. This isn’t about adding more concrete. It’s about how forces move through materials. Good structural design prevents failure before it starts.
