- a little note for sand boa owners: sand can be used in moderation for sand boas but shouldn’t be their sole substrate. I plan to provide a mix of soil and sand in one section of her main enclosure and aspen in the other. If you want to use sand, make sure it’s dust free to avoid respiratory issues, make sure the granules are very fine so it doesn’t get stuck in their scales, and do not ever feed them on the sand, as it can cause impactions!
>in summary: sand can be fun enrichment for sand boas, but even though their name is “sand boa”, they don’t live solely on sand. it’s better as an enrichment option if anything, rather than filling the entire enclosure with sand!

KEDifferent substrate seedling update! 🌱
Fluval + perlite vs. chunky soilless mix — it’s been an interesting comparison!
The seeds in the soilless mix are finally catching up, but they’re still a bit smaller than the ones started in Fluval. For now, I’m sticking with Fluval as my go-to germination substrate!
Next step: removing the lids so they have more room to grow, then transferring them into a soilless mix in their own pots.

BIEnzymes: The Superheroes of Biochemistry! ✨🔬
Enzymes are tiny but mighty organic molecules that act as catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions without being used up themselves.
🧩 How they work:
Substrate (reactant) fits into the enzyme → forming the enzyme–substrate complex.
Through the induced-fit model, the enzyme slightly changes shape to hug the substrate more closely.
End result? The substrate is converted into products, and the enzyme is free to work again! 🔁
⚡ Helpers (Co-factors):
Sometimes enzymes need extra assistance from vitamins (like B6, B12) or minerals (Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Mn²⁺) to function properly.
⛔ Inhibition:
Competitive: A “look-alike” molecule sneaks in and competes for the active site (blocking the real substrate).
Non-competitive: A molecule binds elsewhere on the enzyme, changing its shape and shutting it down.
🌡️ Factors affecting enzyme activity:
Temperature: Enzymes work best at ~37°C. Too cold = sluggish 🥶. Too hot = denatured and destroyed 🔥.
pH: Each enzyme has its sweet spot! For many, it’s around pH 7. Too acidic or too alkaline → structure falls apart.
💡 Example: Peroxidase enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). But if a competitive inhibitor like hydroxylamine shows up, it blocks the enzyme from working.
⚡ TL;DR: Enzymes = Life’s speed boosters. Without them, essential reactions in your body would be way too slow to keep you alive! ❤️

GEMadagascan rainforest enclosure build for the largest gecko I own, Uroplatus fimbriatus! This is just a scaled up version of how I build sikorae and henkeli enclosures. Taller and thicker branches, bigger plants like large birds nest ferns to hang with their size, and ofc a @zoomedlabs reptibreeze 2x2x4 fitted with polywall how I always do. Uroplatus are very simple to set up!
