MIIn December 1992, 16-year-old Suzanne Capper of Greater Manchester, England was k*dnapped, tort**ed, and ultimately m**dered by a group of people she once called “friends.” What began as a cruel vendetta over petty grievances — including a claim she caused an outbreak of pubic lice and stole a duffel coat — quickly escalated into a week of escalating brutality.
Capper was lured to a house in Moston, where her attackers shaved her hair and eyebrows and held her captive for seven days, repeatedly b**ting and humiliating her. On 14 December 1992, fearing she would be reported missing, they forced her into a stolen car, drove her into the countryside near Werneth Low, and poured p*trol over her before setting her on f*re.
Suzanne did not die immediately. With grievous burns over about 80% of her body, she staggered from the woods to Compstall Road, where workers found her and called for help. She was taken to Withington Hospital and, even as she slipped into a coma, was able to identify her attackers to police. Suzanne died of multiple organ failure from her burns on 18 December 1992.
Six people — Bernadette McNeilly, Jean Powell, Glyn Powell, Anthony Dudson, Jeffrey Leigh, and Clifford Pook — were arrested and tried. McNeilly, Jean Powell, Glyn Powell, and Dudson received life sentences for murder, while Leigh and Pook were convicted of false imprisonment. In later years, some life-sentenced offenders were released on licence, reigniting public outrage over Suzanne’s case.
Suzanne’s m**der horrified the UK and remains one of its most disturbing cases of group-perpetrated cruelty and betrayal.
