ELThis is a Playtron from @playtronica. It can turn objects like food into musical instruments with help from your computer or smart phone. Playtronica sent me one to experiment with. I picked up some seasonal produce and tried it out with their web-based piano synth and VCV Rack as well (Pink Trombone module, ftw). With gourds, cutting away some of the outer skin seemed to help. Fully dry corn doesn’t conduct well, so it seems that maybe fresh food works best. MIDI is sent as notes and the specific notes are labeled clearly on the patch points on the PCB. It’s a really fun little board and I like that it only uses one USB for MIDI and power! I’m now looking at everything I own as a possible sound maker.

Once, buses across Sumatra played music. The “kalason” — a keyboard wired to a web of air horns — turned long rides into concerts. Passengers would request Minangkabau folk tunes, and young “tukang kalason” like Pak Badar played songs of home for those chasing a better life.
By the 1980s, the buses vanished — and so did the music.
Now, decades later, a local hot rod enthusiast has revived the instrument, letting Pak Badar play again.
After years of holding onto this story, it’s finally time to share it.
