Okay, we’ve all been there … you know that moment when you just realized you were just a tad (read: wildly 😅) rude to a student who may or may not have been driving you nuts! Well, here are 11 rude habits to avoid when teaching, even if that student is basically the troglodyte terror from … well… you get it: 1. Comparing them with your other classes, “My other kids get it.” 2. Telling the students something is EASY… that will make em feel great if they struggle with it 3. Instead of saying a kid’s name (because you don’t remember OR can’t pronounce it), saying “Hey, you.” or “Red Shirt kid.” 4. Staring dramatically after a mistake… We get it. You’re disappointed. So is Beethoven. 5. Saying things like “You should know this by now.” followed by a dramatic sigh. 6. Interrupting a kid who speaks slower just because you need to move on. 7. Pointing out one individual kid’s mistake for the entire class to see and harping on it. 8. Clapping at them mid-sentence. 9. Expressing your disappointment in them in front of other colleagues (after a big test, at a concert, at a science fair, etc) 10. Correcting EVERYTHING. Give them a chance! 11. Making fun of kids, yes, even the poorly behaved ones. And FIVE KIND PHRASES to Adopt: 1. Smile, then “You can do this! Let’s try again!” 2. When a colleague’s students outperform your kids: “My students have worked so hard this year and I am really proud!” 3. “Remind me of your name one more time!” 4. “This material is so fun once we get into it! Let’s keep working!” 5. When a kid makes an embarrassing mistake, “This is the perfect place to take a reasonable risk. No worries if we don’t get it right the first time!” Which of these have you seen? A teacher’s inbox is a unique and wild place. Between the “I can’t wake my kid up for school” and “my child refuse to do any school work at home” emails, there actually are some teacher-related emails. Replying to “parenting issue” emails is tough. I always try to tread lightly and not offer any parenting advice that could be taken the wrong way. Instead, I focus on how I can help their child once they are in my classroom and how teachers, parents, and students can all work together on the same team to accomplish the shared goal.
