While sitting at the podium with teammates before a Sweet Sixteen matchup, Hayes quietly leaned toward them and whispered about a female staff member nearby, saying, “Gosh, she’s beautiful.” What he didn’t realize was that his microphone was still live. Reporters in the room immediately heard the comment through the speakers and began laughing, which alerted Hayes that the mic had picked it up. Realizing what happened, he covered his face with his hands in embarrassment and jokingly asked the room if they heard him. The clip quickly spread online and became one of the most talked about “hot mic” moments in college sports media, largely because the comment was simply an innocent compliment. Despite the awkward moment, the clip only added to Hayes’ reputation for being charismatic and humorous during interviews throughout Wisconsin’s tournament run.
