These waves consist of alternating crests (high points) and troughs (low points). If the trough reaches the shore first, it pulls water away from the coastline, causing the sea level to recede and sometimes exposing the sea floor. This phenomenon, known as a “drawback,” can occur minutes before the main wave arrives.
