ANIs AI good for you? That was a question I was posed by Nicky Campbell on BBC Five Live this morning.
30 years ago we asked the same question about the internet. Today it underpins everything we do. AI is at that same “awkward teenage” stage:
Powerful and growing fast
Unevenly understood
Unevenly distributed
The real issue isn’t “Will AI destroy us?”
It’s: Do we actually understand what it can and can’t do?
When people see simple use cases – like dropping an Excel file into an AI tool and having it instantly analysed – they often say: “I didn’t know it could do that.”
To thrive in this new era we don’t just need AI literacy. We need:
Digital curiosity – trying the tools, pushing the buttons
Critical thinking – not blindly trusting outputs, but questioning them
Regulation will always lag behind technology, so we can’t outsource our responsibility to governments or “tech bros”. We each need to become more curious and more critical in how we use AI.
AI isn’t just about replacing jobs – it’s about augmenting human potential when we learn to use it well.
Are you digitally curious enough?
