KAPresident Donald Trump dismissed criticisms of Saudi Crown Prince over the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying ‘things happen.’ The president said the Crown Prince “knew nothing about it” and said of Khashoggi that “a lot of people didn’t like that gentleman.”
Trump lashed out at ABC News reporter Mary Bruce who asked the question, calling her “fake news” and chastising her saying “you don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking him a question like that.”
As a reminder, the CIA concluded that the crown prince approved the operation that killed Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was a Saudi citizen who lived in Northern Virginia and wrote columns that were often critical of the Saudi monarchy. He was killed during a visit to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct 2, 2018. His body was dismembered and his remains have never been found.
"We assess that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey, to capture or kill" Kashoggi, the report issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said. "Since 2017, the crown prince has had absolute control of the kingdom's security and intelligence organizations making it highly unlikely that Saudi officials would have carried out an operation of this nature without the crown prince's authorization," it added.
Saudi Arabia has rejected the CIA's findings, saying "that the report contained inaccurate information and conclusions."
